SEATTLE -- Chris Young and Robinson Cano arrived in Seattle with fanfare at opposite ends of the spectrum. Seattle couldnt celebrate the arrival of Cano enough. Young was a last-second addition plucked at the end of spring training. Each has proven invaluable in keeping Seattle at .500 at the 50-game mark of the season. Young pitched shutout ball until Albert Pujols homered in the seventh inning, Cano had three hits and two RBIs to raise his average to .332, and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1 on Monday. While the production from Cano was expected after he signed a $240 million contract to join the Mariners, what Young has contributed is a surprise, especially with Seattle down two expected starters in the rotation. "I was trying to find the adjectives to describe this guy today, but what a godsend hes been for this rotation," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Hes been tremendous. In and out, up and down, he never wavers and knows what he wants to do." Young (4-2) kept the Angels without a hit until Kole Calhouns single with one out in the sixth inning. An inning later, Pujols hit his 506th career home run, pulling within three of Gary Sheffield for 24th on baseballs all-time homer list. Young lasted only two more batters after Pujols homer, getting pulled after issuing a walk to Raul Ibanez. He struck out five and walked three. But Youngs strong pitching at Safeco Field continued. In four starts at home this season, Young is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA. It was a solid rebound for Young, who got knocked around in losing his previous two starts. He gave up 10 hits and five runs in losing to Minnesota and allowed four runs and seven hits in a loss to Texas last week. In Youngs last seven starts for Seattle, the Mariners are 5-2. Its an impressive turnaround considering Young spent all of last season out of the majors after shoulder surgery. "When youre out there competing, you expect to win. I wouldnt take the ball if I didnt expect to go out and compete and win," Young said. "To say its surprising, after all the hard work and time rehabbing I put in I would say no." After McClendon lamented Seattles production following losses over the weekend to Houston, the Mariners responded with five runs in the first two innings off Tyler Skaggs (4-2). Seattle scored three unearned runs with two outs in the second. The top three hitters in Seattles order did the damage against Skaggs. James Jones scored twice, and Michael Saunders tripled, singled and scored two runs. Cano singled in each of his first three at-bats a day after his streak of reaching base ended at 31 games. "Thats just part of the game sometimes where you take advantage of a pitch over the plate," Cano said. "Sometimes there are games where they throw you that same pitch and you foul it off. ... We took advantage and thats what we want. Those are the little things you want to do." Skaggs wasnt helped by his defence in the second inning when shortstop Erick Aybar couldnt handle Jones one-hopper with two outs. The miscue allowed Dustin Ackley to score and opened the door for two more runs on Saunders triple and Canos infield single. Despite the early trouble, Skaggs threw seven innings and struck out eight. "Tyler understood keeping us in the game," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He made pitches, got on a great streak and pitched seven innings. But the damage was done early." NOTES: Angels dropped to 1-5 vs. Seattle this season. ... Seattle LHP James Paxton (back) said he was not sure when his next throwing session would be after making his first rehab start at Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. ... Seattle RHP Taijuan Walker (shoulder) is scheduled to make his first rehab start on Wednesday at Tacoma. Wholesale Adidas NHL Jerseys . BARCELONA, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo scored two long-range goals to help Real Madrid rout Osasuna 4-0 on Saturday and stay in the Spanish league title chase while resting several first-choice players for its European clash at Bayern Munich. With Gareth Bale recovering from the flu and Karim Benzema on the bench, all of Madrids attack went through Ronaldo on the left flank. And the Ballon dOr winner didnt disappoint by unleashing two similar blasts after cutting inside to put the ball on his right boot and lift his league-leading tally to 30 goals through 35 rounds. Madrid provisionally closed to within three points of leader Atletico Madrid before it visits Valencia on Sunday, when Barcelona, one point behind Madrid, hosts Villarreal. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti also gave valuable rest to defender Pepe and midfielder Xavi Alonso to prepare for its visit to Bayern on Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal. Madrid won the first leg 1-0. "Everything he tried turned out well for us," Ancelotti said about Ronaldo. "We could rest some players and played a good game, even if it wasnt a very intense one." Elsewhere, Getafes 1-0 win over Malaga condemned last-place Real Betis to relegation even before it fell 1-0 at home to Real Sociedad, while Rayo Vallecano scored three times in the second half for a 3-0 win at 10-man Granada. Osasuna lined up to provide Madrid a guard of honour before the match as the hosts paraded their recently won Copa del Rey trophy at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Ronaldo then went to work chalking up his 29th league goal in the sixth minute when he unleashed a trademark blast from outside the area that took a slight deflection off defender Damia Abella before falling just inside the far upright. He looked to get his teammates involved, and set up scoring chances for Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Alvaro Morata. But it fell to Ronaldo to start the seconnd half as he had the first, with Osasunas outclassed defence letting him again dribble to near the elbow of the area before he launched a shot into the top corner of the net in the 52nd.dddddddddddd "Both goals came at the start of each half and that complicated things for us," Osasuna coach Javi Gracia said. "They are both more merit of Ronaldo than my defences fault. Its true Damia touches the first strike and that gives it an effect, but the second shot is unstoppable." Sergio Ramos headed in a third goal in the 60th and Ronaldo went to the bench seconds later to an ovation from the crowd. Dani Carvajal headed home Isco Alarcons lobbed pass to cap the lopsided victory in the 83rd. Osasuna, which lost Raoul Loe and Emiliano Armenteros to injuries, remained three points above the relegation zone along with Getafe. Forward Adrian Colunga scored what proved to be the winner seven minutes into the game at Getafe from a pass by Ciprian Marica, who left his side a man down from the 37th for a second yellow card. But Malaga couldnt take advantage of the extra man and itself lost a player when Marcos Angeleri was sent off for a second booking in the 76th. "This victory is huge," Getafe coach Cosmin Contra said. "You saw team spirit today. We are still alive." Sociedad added to Betis misery by winning thanks to Carlo Velas 54th-minute penalty kick after Juan Carlos Perez fouled him in the area. Sociedad strengthen its hold on sixth place and cemented its Europa League berth for next season. Rayo rose into ninth place with only one loss in its last 10 matches. Rayo held Granada in check in the first half before Yacine Brahimis dismissal for a second yellow card in the 51st turned the match in the visitors favour. All the matches observed a minute of silence before kickoff for Barcelonas former coach, Tito Vilanova, who died on Friday after a battle with cancer. ' ' '
